None of our programmes have an upper age limit and in the past we have hosted participants of all ages. As part of our commitment to your safety, we monitor the stability of all of our volunteer destinations on a daily basis. What duration would you recommend volunteering for? Although we do our best to keep our programme costs as low and as affordable as possible, when you add flights, travel insurance and spending money you may find that you need a little financial help. The Mighty Roar was founded with the aim to make all of our volunteering programmes as affordable and accessible as possible, allowing this once in a lifetime opportunity to all travellers.

Are there any age restrictions to volunteer in Cambodia? You will work 5 days a week, from around 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday. The elephant programme in Cambodia goes above and beyond our expected standards and you can volunteer with the peace and reassurance you are actually helping elephants, rather than harming them. On top of this, elephants are still to this day being illegally captured and tamed to carry out work within the logging industry or to earn money by providing rides to the many thousands of tourists that flock to Cambodia each year. I am really interested in volunteering in Cambodia, when should I apply? If you already have a criminal background check that has been issued within 18 months of your programme start date, then you are more than welcome to provide this.

At the weekends, volunteers live in a guest house in the local town of Sen Monoron. In order for you to confirm and guarantee your placement on one of our programmes, you need to pay the registration fee of 149 within 7 days of your application being successful. The volunteer accommodation does have several dedicated private bungalows for those looking for a bit of privacy while volunteering.

If you have chosen to take our travel insurance or to book a flight through The Mighty Roar, then these must be paid in full before they can be processed. This is important in guiding decisions as to which plant species should be grown for the elephants to feed on in the forest. Can I volunteer abroad with my friends / parents / partner? We strongly recommend that you do not make any flight and / or third party travel arrangements until your place has been confirmed via email by The Mighty Roar.

Over the first day or two you will be given a full orientation that will cover things like emergency procedures, how to use the local transport, the do's and don'ts, local cultures and health and safety information. sanctuary Not only this, but many wild elephants are sustaining serious injuries through snare traps or from fighting with local villagers, resulting in them not being healthy enough tosurvive in the wild. As most volunteers like to socialise on their last Friday night, the majority of volunteers will generally catch the afternoon bus and arrange their flights for the next day Sunday. Over the years we have hosted many volunteers across all of our programmes in Cambodia and have obtained lots of feedback from everyone. Around 6:15am on Sunday morning you will make your way to the meeting point (along with someone from the hotel) where you will then board the VIP minibus at 7am. We regularly have volunteers come for 1 to 2 weeks that tell us they wish they stayed for longer. Generally, it is best to avoid tight and very short clothing and anything that may have offensive slogans on it. This is where your help and funds can help make a major difference. Therefore, having a travel insurance policy in place will help you with any problems you may encounter during your time away.

For international participants, we recommend you obtain a Police/Criminal Background Check through your local police station or official governmental body. Volunteering abroad can at times be both physically and mentally challenging, therefore we ask that all participants be fit in both areas. In order for you to participate in any of our volunteering programmes, you will need to present to us a clean criminal background check (also known as a DBS or Police Check). Whether you are travelling for 1 week or 6 months, having adequate travel insurance that covers your entire duration abroad is an essential and compulsory part of your adventure. You are more than welcome to book your flights independently and we can help assist and double check that the flight route and arrival / departure times are correct. We will send an email entitled 'Welcome to TMR', which will include a link to your online account where you can access the handbook and other important details. A criminal background check is a mandatory requirement for all volunteers aged 16 and over. All of the below prices exclude the 149 registration fee. As part of the programme fee, you will also be able to enjoy dinner on the Saturday night (up to the value of $10) and breakfast first thing Sunday morning. You are of course more than welcome to travel and volunteer with your friends, family members and / or your partner. You should ensure that your flight lands into Phnom Penh International Airport on your selected start date being a Saturday. Due to the bad road infrastructure and the possibility of breakdowns, we normally advise everyone to arrange their flights for Sunday or at the earliest 9/10pm on the Saturday. The most moderate weather can be found between October and December, when it is relevantly cool and dry. Your time in Cambodia will be supporting the first and only true sanctuary in the country. We recommend that you budget between 50 and 100 per week for general expenses and some independent travel. As human populations grow, new houses and farms are being developed and are encroaching on what was once the elephants natural home or pathway. However, if you have opted for the bungalow option you will be given a private room for the weekend.

Conversely, volunteering outside of these months will typically provide the greatest opportunity to become fully immersed at the projects and within the local community and give you the chance to build a greater bond with our local team.

What are the requirements to be a volunteer in Cambodia? What will a typical week in Cambodia entail? With the support of volunteers, the local team have the resources to work with the local Bunong community to discourage further domestication of wild elephants by demonstrating the value of elephants living freely in the forest. Surrounded by picturesque waterfalls and protected rainforests, you will be able to spend your free time enjoying nature outdoors. It's recommended that you take some nicer clothes for weekends or any free time you may have. Elephants can come to this dedicated and large sanctuary based in the dense jungles of Mondulkiri for short or long term rehabilitation and be assisted and looked after by a range ofprofessionals. If you are staying in a dorm accommodation during the week you will be allocated a twin room and share with another volunteer. We find that age does not play an important part of volunteering abroad, as everyone has travelled for the same reason and to make new friends.

However, if you plan to travel every weekend and take part in many activities then you should budget accordingly. In fact, the rainy season is quite refreshing and brings some respite from the heat. 8am - You will either head out to visit the elephants in the forest or take part in some other volunteering work. If you are looking to travle extensively, then we would recommend extending you trip at the end of your volunteering placement to allow you plenty of time to explore the rest of Cambodia. Unfortunately, as with the case with most animals, captive elephants cannot be released into the wild. This has resulted in an increase of human-elephant conflict, as elephants wander into farms and small towns and damage buildings or eat / ruin crops. This must be submitted and approved no less than 21 days prior to your programme start date. During your time in Cambodia, you will be staying within the volunteer accommodation that has been constructed in the traditional Bunong style and mainly from recycled materials. If you are travelling to Cambodia as a family (with at least one person being aged 18 years or over), then we are happy to welcome anyone from 5 years and up on the programme start date. Located on the slopes of the valley, you can enjoy the stunning views over the surrounding forest where many varieties of birds can be seen. For example, if you are volunteering for one week, from Saturday to Saturday, this is in actual fact 8 days and you will need to take out 2 weeks insurance to be fully covered. On weekends volunteers are responsible for sourcing and paying for their own meals.

Our UK and in-country teams are able to complete and sign-off any paperwork that is required before your volunteer placement begins, during your trip and upon your return. As you will be volunteering in the remote jungles of Cambodia, your travelling opportunities will be limited to your free time over the weekends. It is best to also take some older clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. By doing this, not only can we ensure everything is safe and running as planned, but we can truly tell you what to expect and can provide informed recommendations and advice about anything relating to your trip. When paying for your remaining balance, this can be made in one lump sum or split into several smaller instalments - just as long as the balance is clear 60 days prior to your programme start date. Your transport back to the airport is included within the programme fee and you will follow the same route taken to get to the project site. This is the perfect place to ask any questions from previous volunteers and to also talk with other volunteers who will be volunteering at the same time as you. Although The Mighty Roar does everything in their power to ensure each and every trip is safe, inevitably things can and do go wrong. We ask that you be flexible with regards to holidays and generally a holiday would offer a unique experience to enjoy in the festivities. The closest town is called Sen Monorom and is where you will spend your weekends while volunteering in Cambodia. If you don't have a valid DBS check then you will need to apply for one. It is important for you to consult with your local doctor or travel clinic to find out which vaccinations are needed / recommended.
