I love those trailers! Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. I actually got this book from my school library today, before first period, and i DEVOURED the book. Re: Obsessive love for no reason? It is based on a link to The Twilight Saga!

Keep it up.

Replace sparkly stalker vampire with yellow eyed werewolf and its pretty much the same story. I am not sure I can even find the words to describe how much I loved this book.

Ooh, I also like that her name is Grace. What is there to win? Driver of things with wheels.

A wolf who can turn into a boy meets a girl called Grace and they fall in love. The thing is, this story was NOTHING like Twilight, and to me, the characters seemed very much real.

Yes, I get that Grace feels a kinship to her childhood savior wolfboy, and that Sam is obsessed with hottie Grace. A boring girl whose only personality traits are obsessing about her supernatural boyfriend, doing homework and cooking dinner for her parents - check; an emo supernatural boyfriend whose life revolves around his human flame, who plays an instrument and writes songs for his. They certainly are completely co-dependent and obsessed with each other but this doesnt strike me as romantic. So the story goes with Grace, a simple girl, who is protected by wolves that hang out around the woods near her backyard.

Let us know whats wrong with this preview of, Published Another thing that stood out to me, but seems invisable to other reviews and comments, was how bland and rushed the writing style was. [The only way for Jack to have acquired anger management issues from his father is if he were on the receiving end of it or if he had witnessed it, both of which would be very traumatic to a child. Maybe the library has a copy I can skim through.

I find myself in a similar situation with Shiver. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. Sam drives to the home of his adoptive farther, Geoffrey Beck, revealing that the pack all live there together over the summer months. But Grace got on my nerves a little.

Basically it was because I thought the story was kind of cliche and overrated and I actually happened to have already read a werewolf-themed book before. Looking for new young adult books featuring determined protagonists, sweet romance, and adventures of every kind?

Certainly Shiver is written well enough, and will appeal to fans of Ms. Stiefvaters earlier work & to those of the romantic Twilight persuasion but its not the book for me.

-She has an old truck You will not turn into a wolf, you will die, a slow and painful death. Of course you have the pretty girl and the dangerous guyThats when I started to question it. Note, do not go wandering into the woods. Thanks!!

i love to read this post keep posting worthy stuff, wonderful article i really like it keep posting worthy stuff.

so good

Justno. They were licking me, biting me, worrying at my body, pressing in. I love this review! I do know that there is a companion book in the works called LINGER about the wolves of Mercy Falls which Ill definitely be picking up!

The writing is lyrical, the descriptions are breathtaking, and you can acutely feel the longing between the two teens, and their desperate struggle to keep Sam from changing.

Who?

Grace has been obsessed with the wolves ever since, always looking for her wolf. She leaves home one night and Sam is ecstatic to see her.

Cole realises that, because Grace was bitten but didn't change in a set amount of time, she's dying.

So its disappointing. Well, while I understand that the author wrote her first draft of "Shiver" before "Twilight" came out, still, the similarities are striking. For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house.

js.src='https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js'; There was truly something surreal and creepy about that part of this story that grabbed me, though.

Fave partcandy shop. Then, theres the ridiculous ending/resolution of the book. So, yeah, I just couldnt love this book, and I actually like Twilight. Yet, I can not judge a book just by its cover.

But i guess it all matters on quickly you see things. Hardcover: 400 pages.

Your review has been submitted successfully, thank you.

He answers, saying he has been locked in a shed on the Culpeper's estate. Youthful obsession masquerading as loveit bothers me.

Most of my dislike stemmed from a simple but undeniably important keystone for a novel: the characters. But Maggie didnt say in the book that Grace is totally sexy and the same with sam.

So many wonderful books out there to discover.

It may seem obvious to you that such would be the case, but it was not obvious to me. Feeling sorry for her, Beck turned her.

August 1st 2009

One yellow-eyed wolfher wolfis a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. A LOT.

Grace is chased into a sinkhole by Shelby. Here's how I imagine Stiefvater's meeting with the publishing house.

When another freak attack occurs in town, and the wolves kill a teenage boy, a hunting party is assembled to shoot the pack in the woods and Grace is terrified for her wolf. Grace lived, and in the winters ever since her attack, she has always looked into the woods behind her house, always catching a glimpse of those same intense yellow eyes watching her, keeping her safe.

I almost cried when Jack died, but I got over it when Sam came back as a human. Meningitis.

Isabel injects him with bacterial meningitis as a possible cure, but he disappears into the woods after transforming. I completely agree with you! Anyway, I thought it was sweet, and Im no fan of romance. (: It was fantasy brought to life, i could clearly imagine each and every sentence, no words can explain how good this book is!

Finally, Isabel discovers that her parents are sending her to California for ruining the hunt.

Refresh and try again. FACE IT twilight isnt that awesome that, other authors need to steal from it. Gorgeous.

I am not typically a fan of falling in love with dogs. Darn it!

Thank you. That is the extent of Graces character.

It Kept ME WANTING MOREE ! I can see perfectly Graces side as to why shes even in love with Sam, but Sams point of view is a little hazy, and thats a problem I was willing to think about only after Ive finished the entire thing. She moved to Mercy Falls from California when she was 14.

What sort of sick shit is this? It was just so amazing.!

Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. It probably is one of the best young adult couples I've ever had the pleasure of reading about. . Cole then gives Grace his DNA and she shifts, escaping out the window. I just lay there and let it happen, watching the winter-white sky go gray above me. The ending was p. Picked up a copy of Shiver last night, sat down to read it, and did not get up until 2am, when I finished it.

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house.

sinner. Cole and Isabel share a past that never seemed to have a future.

Now, in Forever, the stakes are even higher than before. It has to be. SPOILER: Come on, MENINGITIS is the magic cure!??!?!?! .

I am not inclined to read. it was a big change from the books that i normally read but it was still verry injoyable and so was Linger and now i just have to wait for forever and i will definatly read that one as well. That is really informative, few books recommended by you were quite interesting. Similar to Lament, however, I could not for a second believe that these characters had any reason to be so blindly, worshipfully devoted to each other.

Shiver was okay for me. Thanks for sharing such amazing Info also,Check out my website, Im Searching for best faucet water filter. It gave me an amazing feeling throughout the whole entire book. She has dirty blonde hair and is the most beautiful girl Sam has ever seen; John Marx, the brother of Grace's close friend Olivia Marx, would also call her "good looking" as a pet name.

Isabel is shocked to discover that her father is arranging for the wolves to be removed from the protected species list.

1)yah theres were wolves but lots of other books have them too, I really wouldve liked to hear from Sams POV. This book wasnt based off of Twilight.

I believe Shiver is the first of 3 books. I have recomened this book to all of my friends and they have loved it! Very nice and informative keep posting worthy stuff like that. Maggie Stiefvater has stated that she has not completely disregarded the option to adapt the first novel of the series into a film, but has stated that it shall not be occurring in the near future. Ive now read it about 10 times and I still want to read it again! They tell him that Sam was successfully cured but they have to move the wolves. In the parking lot she accuses him of being drunk, before telling him to never call her again.

I thought Sam was rather the opposite of an alpha male (which was so refreshing to find in a werewolf). (for tons of cash). All my friends love this book and the two books after this. I LOVE SHIVER SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (every publisher, ever) And more importantly, why? , your review of the book really helped me alot so thanks i love shiver I have read both Twilight and Shiver, and I couldnt help noticing the similarities between the two as I read. I went in expecting an eerie, bittersweet love story and that's exactly what I got.

and Grace and Sam even though when it happens Sam isnt humanthey fall in love..it happens. Beyond their unyielding forever love for each other, Grace and Sam had no other defining characteristics that made them human or remotely believable as characters. Forced into revealing the pack's secrets, Grace invites Isabel over to her house, where she and Sam explain about the werewolves. Man, I definitely agree with the person reviewing Shiver. Her parents have fun and dont really take care of themselves or Grace, so its up to quiet, everygirl Grace to make Quiche dinners and check that the fridge is stocked.

it just isnt guys.

Like, CRAZY in love. In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Sign up to our newsletters full of updates, activities, ways to support us and fun ideas to inspire children to read. -etc I thought that it was a quick read that will pass the time waiting for the bus or the end of class, but nothing substantial. Consequently so do vampires, much like the vampires in the Twilight books which this novel was clearly based off of.

I somehow see the Twilight references, but I dont think Sam is anywhere near Edward and Grace is so much better than Bella. For one certain comment on here, no this book will not make other people scared of the bath tub and not want them to have showers or baths because of this book. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Artist. In summer, a few precious months of being human .

SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!?!

And Im partial to her writing style. Im definitely not going to read it again.

Cole calls her and she is thrilled that he is alive.

Cole calls his old band member Jeremy Shutt, wanting him to return to playing bass for him.

Furthermore, shape-shifting is impossible because mass cannot simply disappear.

Wed love your help. Maggie Stiefvater is one of the greatest YA authors writing now.

Thanks for the linkage!

I really want to read this book series, i have like 10 different books i have wanted to read but from the reviews and the exerpts that i have looked up i think i am going to put this at the top of my list , I just took time reading Shiver last weekend even though I had bought it way back in March this year.

[7] The second book in the series, Linger, debuted at number 1 on the NYT Bestseller list in 2010.

Even when I opened the first page of the book I was still taken back by how simple and beautiful it was. Shiver also reminded me of Twilight in so many ways.

Isabel begins an on-off relationship with werewolf Cole.

For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past .

Thea James is one half of the maniacal duo behind The Book Smugglers. Sam being the exception. Keep posting these kind of content.

Avid reader. They have the power to love each other and the power to tear each other apart.

Thanks for sharing. *NOTE: I should mention that I loathe tortured love stories of the obsessed nature.

Some of you guys are frickin nuts. 1) NOT LIKE TWILIGHT I was lost to a sea of cold, and then I was reborn into a world of warmth. I can't even begin to express how creepy her obsession with a wolf is. 4)Sam has a laid back, shy attitude, unlike jacob from twilight. If only this had been a short story about one girls creepy obsession with wolves, I think I could have really liked it. The second book, Linger (2010), includes the perspectives of Isabel Culpeper and Cole St Clair, alongside those of Grace and Sam. I found this an intriguing concept, and I appreciated the effort to see the thoughts of both characters but at times it could be confusing to remember whose head I was in, as Grace and Sam tended to sound exactly the same. [] The Book Smugglers Share Posted in Prizes Tags: adventure, Fantasy, werewolf, Young adult One of fReados favorites open for bidding again Tempt me at Twilight by lisa Kleypas You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site. Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. I already finished it and cant wait to get linger, and for forever to come out. But it sounds like Stiefvaters just not your thing. This is going to be an excellent thing for the upcoming generations. The romance was sweet and all, but it definitely lacked a proper build up.

I REALLY didnt like how this review didnt highlight any of the good qualities, so maybe try to find good things in a book too.

The death of Jack Culpeper, a student at Grace's school, spreads terror throughout the small community of Mercy Falls, as it is suspected that he has been killed by the wolves.

This felt much more like obsession to me and it creeped me out. I couldnt remember what it felt like to be warm. LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVETHIS BOOK! And I hav not read shiver.Although My best friend did and he really likes itHe also loves The Twilight SagaI was looking to find good reviews because so far I had found all good reviews until now. He often puts his feelings into lyrics, becoming human again at the end of Forever. After Grace disappears, he vows to find her again. I think their feelings for one another grew into something realistic. As I read this book I had the strange urge to lock up my German s. I started reading this book and a curious thing happened. In between going on dates with Isabel and transforming into a werewolf in his bathroom, Cole begins writing NARKOTIKA's new album.

I agree so much that I actually have to RANT about it. Their date is interrupted by a phone call from Baby, informing him that preparations have been made to host the auditions on the beach, as he had requested. But I do love and adore the Twilight books so it has nothing to do with the romance/Romeo and Juliet aspect I JUST DIDNT CARE FOR THE OTHER CHARACTERS AND IT did bore me at times. thought it was AMASING !!!! Together, Grace and Sam fight to keep him as human, no matter the cost. I love this book as much now as I did back in the day! .

The bestiality was definitely the most beautiful part of this story.

but the Twilight books had Jacob and the pack being shape shifters, if you read all of the books, you would read that they could have changed into anything but a wolf was what they chose.

And its very obvious that they made a connection not an OBSESSION. Why? I was laughing part of the way through and crying the other half out of boredom. Even though the characters were nothing like Bella & Edward, it sorta reminded me of Twilight (alot). I do have to say that Maggie did write the sexuality and topic of sex really well. I could have screamed, but I didnt. Yellow. I love this book.

I have read all of the twilight books and loved them!!!!! Ok ..Yes You have some(very few) Interesting points.

As long as these girls do not start rejecting the idea of personal hygeine because bathtubs are scary the world may still have a chance, albeit a furry one. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay humanor risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

She can play the game as well as all the other fakes.

Grace and Sam first meet when she is eleven, and attacked by his pack of wolves. The secondary cast of characters is negligible and even less fleshed out than these two protagonists.

But that in itself does not a good story make, and I found myself bored with Shiver. Shiver revolves around Grace and Sams burningly desperate need to KEEP SAM HUMAN OR ELSE! I found that I agree. And if it makes the reviewer an anathema in girl romance world, it makes me one too.

There may have only been 3 tiny thrillers in the whole dang thingboring. All of the characters were just empty shells who have one defying aspect (be it cooking to eye color) and my main thought was: WRITTEN IN A RUSH TO CASH IN ON NEW MOON/TAYLOR LAUNTNER/TWILIGHT.

 you twihearts act like if i have a character named jacob in a book then i HAVE TO HAVE suddenly mooched it ff twilight, no matter how dull and unlike jacob from twilight is. After rejecting the guitarist and bassist chosen for him, he decidedly informs Baby's that he shall conduct the auditions himself.

What is it with the we have to love each other forever or I will just die plots anymore?

Also I have no love for this book and dont plan on reading Linger Sorry Its just this book isnt for me One more thing I completely agree with Sofia I took me forever to read it, because I didnt want to read it. [].

I read it too, and completely agree with you. She had white blonde hair and Grace called her "beautiful with deep, soulful eyes"; she also has a strong southern accent. ps: it would have been a copy if idk their eyes changed when they were about to change. Her character was introduced as being Jack's sister in Shiver, and she later becomes a narrator in Linger, Forever and Sinner. Additional Thoughts: Although I didnt care much for Shiver, I absolutely love the book trailer that Maggie Stiefvater created herself (from paper cutouts and composed the music too!). Our moral? I fell in love with Sam. The book review is just amazing.

Thea, you raise a good question on whether Sam and Grace love each other or is it an obsession? In what month(day would also be helpful) did this book occur in? "Just like your eyes. To sum it up, this book should have been called "Twilight: Team Jacob Version."

Shelby is a troubled werewolf in the pack who was sexually abused in her human life. I agree with the obession-creepy and really not good for a story. After the auditions have finished, Cole unsuccessful in his search of a new bassist, Jeremy finally agrees to join NARKOTIKA again. He later returns as a human, revealing the cure had worked.

It nothing like twilight, it is somthing new and grand!

Ive done it with my fiance. I can see what you mean when you say that it was similar to twilight. Baby visits Isabel later in the day and proposes that she should star alongside Cole. She currently lives in Virginia.

As I read this book I had the strange urge to lock up my German sheppard should Grace ever decide to visit my home because she really does fall in love with a dog for YEARS before she ever finds out it's a boy or that things like werewolves exist.

I get this water filter after a long quality research. In Linger, they fought to be together. Saved from their attack by a yellow-eyed wolf, the 6 years following consist of Grace routinely watching the edge of the woods behind her house in search of her saviour he returns her gaze every winter.

Sam and Cole find her and manage to save her, locking her in the bathroom until she can change back.

This book was hands-down one of the best Ive read in a while.

They take Grace to hospital and stop Sam from seeing her. 2)tourtured past: NOT A TURNOFF (unles youre a pransy) fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);

But, the middle of this story is really, really douchey.

She has blue eyes and blonde hair, though her long ringlets are cut short and jagged at the start of Linger. She is Filipina-American, but grew up in Hawaii, Indonesia, and Japan. The characters never felt real to me, and the plot what little of it there actually was felt shabby and cobbled together. I did not understand why Grace and Sam were in love, and I did not get the character of Grace. I am not typically a fan of falling in love with dogs. The books are amazing I just wish she would have kept writing more books for the series. To hide her grief over Jack, she ends up kissing him, but he disappears as a wolf again.

I loved twilight because of all the conflict and constant going ons, but Shiver made me want to close the book and do my homework. IT IS AMAZZING. All Rights Reserved.

Time to move on, Id say. it doesnt make it unapealing unless your a prancy who cant take some violence . The novels largely follow the relationship of Grace Brisbane and Samuel K. Sam Roth, as tensions between humans and wolves/werewolves rise throughout the small town of Mercy Falls, in the wake of the attack of a school boy. Isabel eventually finds him and brings him inside, saving him from the cold. All the content are very useful and very helpful. I am not sure I can even find the words to describe how much I loved this book.

Also he had personality and sarcasm which I irresistable! After returning from hospital, Grace makes plans to go and live with Sam at Beck's house. If someone was to shape-shift into a wolf, they would be an extremely large wolf that would more than likely be mistaken for bigfoot, and bigfoot isnt sexy. And Grace seemed the more dominant character, very set in her ways and very unsentimental/romantic about life in general.

2.

. Having not seen Sam in months, Grace finally finds him appearing at the edge of the woods behind her house, shockingly in human form.

Isabel suggested bacterial meningitis as a cure. They spend a lot of time heating up the house and heating up the car, and making sure that Sam only ever spends a split second in the cold running from the house to the car or the car to the house.

And at least the author didnt out right say he was hot. Theres some half cocked story about a jealous she-wolf that wants Sam all for herself, but that rapidly fizzles out into nothing. talked on the computer for 2 years never meeting but only being a town awaythen finally meeting two years ago and getting engaged a year later, and then getting married this october.

Maggie also had a lot of interesting plots she could of runed with. I thought the writing was really vivid so much that you felt that you were there. Grace becomes very sick and, when she cries in pain, her parents find Sam in her room. She was the one to turn Jack and kill Olivia.

she was using wolf traits and making a more realistic werewolf. Love at first site is VERY real. {var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];

//]]>. Not a lot of book characters are named Grace :/ My name is Grace!

I honestly didnt see their love as obsessive, and I could completely understand why theyd fall for each other without having it spelled out for me (Grace makes Sam feel human, Sam makes Grace feel wanted). You can also hear Maggie Stiefvater read the first two chapters aloud HERE. Its just not romantic at all, and is usually accompanied by violently protective male characters and ridiculously beautiful female characters. thanks, Amazing content with too much information. And heres the official book trailer, which isnt bad either: Verdict: Shiver simply wasnt for me.

very nice keep posting worthy stuff like this.

But still by far one of the best books I have ever read. And also i disagree, like the talk about the obsession.

I am so glad to talk about this content. Its her wolf.

It starts out with a ghostly beauty that is legitimately respectable. The only thing for certain is that they cannot let go. A different setting, with different characters, and this time with a new take on werewolvesI was excited.

Very informative article.

Back at school, Grace's close friend Olivia Marx reveals that a wolf had been sighted outside the school the day prior. It's her wolf.

Twilight fans, especially those on Team Jacob, To sum it up, this book should have been called "Twilight: Team Jacob Version."

Theres no possible way they could really love each other like that instantly there were no given reasons other than that they found each other pretty.

Like what happened to that she wolf? After some words of advice from his friend, Leon, and a phone call to Grace, Cole takes his parents out for dinner.

And as for the obsessive parts, I dont think its actually obsessive, despite the lack of reason behind Sams love for Grace, is because Sam has limited time as a human and he has to make the most of it with Grace, and ta-da, you get something that looks a little like obsessive, but then and again. And it ends with the same stark, Midwestern haunting feeling. After discovering that Jack was a werewolf, she helped Grace with Sam, growing very close to her.

&& I Suggest Everyone should read it tooo ! Grace calls Beck, alerting him to the situation. xxxxx, 8) . On the other hand, I find Ms. Stiefvaters writing beautifully descriptive and poetic. Well, I LOVED THIS BOOK. But what's the point? whsmith

Disgusted that Beck would put others through the pain of transforming, he leaves. Thanks for sharing such nice content. Who really cares if vampires and werewolves are fantasy?

For another take on Shiver, I highly encourage all readers to give Angies Review (of Angieville) a try. okayyyyyyyyyyyy.

There are more than 1.7 million copies of the Shiver trilogy in print.[8]. Cole begins living in the house supplied by Baby alongside the three-member band she had arranged.

Im sorry to see you didnt like Shiver, Thea.

Grace and Sam are in love. A boring girl whose only personality traits are obsessing about her supernatural boyfriend, doing homework and cooking dinner for her parents - check; an emo supernatural boyfriend whose life revolves around his human flame, who plays an instrument and writes songs for his girl - check; a boy and a girl sleeping in the same bed night after night and no matter how much this girl asks for "it," the hero says "no," because it's not "right" - check; parents, who are oblivious to the fact that their daughter practically has a live-in boyfriend - check. Hence, I found them charming and interesting.

Looking forward to reading more. so it feels strange to be on the other side of a minority opinion - to enjoy a book most seem to not like - as its usually the other way around. Books are the perfect place to explore and talk about the complexities of the heart. I Have To Get This Book ! The second novel in the projected Mercy Falls trilogy reintroduces us to Sam and Grace, and concentrates on the relationship developing between them as humans.
